The project "Tales of weaving" starts in National museum of history

On March 1st, 2010, the traditional spring holiday “Baba Marta” will be celebrated at the National Museum of History (NIM). The celebration will mark the start of the project “Tales of weaving”.
The project is developed in the framework of the program “Authentic Folklore”, addressing the young audience. It is organized by the National Museum of History together with the financial support of the National Fund “Culture”. Its main partner is “Prof. Decho Denev” School in
The project will continue for one year – from March 1st, 2010 to February 28th, 2011.
The project is orientated towards the specifics of children’s interpretation of human experience, enriched by the creative activities of Bulgarian traditions, such as the skills of weaving.
Archeological finds dated as early as the New Stone Age, such as clay weights for spindles and weaving looms, show that weaving was among the most ancient home occupations. The tradition was preserved trough the ages as a main activity, even to the middle of the 20th century, when almost every Bulgarian peasant woman was able to weave. Today, the picture is quite different. Only a small number of elderly women and even fewer among the young women are acquainted with the special skills of weaving.
The National Museum of History has a large collection of traditional woven fabrics and costumes from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, as well as devices needed in the preparatory stages of traditional weaving. The project creates a good opportunity to work with young people – acquiring skills, mastering the traditional techniques of weaving and in the same time working with traditional and recycled materials.
The final goal of the project is to stimulate the socialization of young people with specific needs through the acquiring of knowledge and skills, as part of the eternal values and heritage of traditional Bulgarian culture.
